Kinetic Tessellations is an ongoing project I have been experimenting with for the past several years. In this series I explore a field of tessellations: a mathematical set of tiled shapes. Starting from a kinetic grid system that I explored in my jewelry work, I introduced a triangle into the pattern and discovered a structure with less predictable movement. Animating the abstract shape, it takes on a personality and mesmerizes viewers as it transforms in a seemingly unpredictable way. Though these works are all created with the same regular pattern, the organic opening and closing motion created by the weight and gravity of the piece makes them feel alive. I love to experiment with different materials and forms to investigate the relationships between line, form, planes, and volume.
