Steel
This proposal for the Austin airport translates the Expanding Landscape form I worked with in sculpture and installation into a more permanent and durable work. As interaction is a key element of my work, I am naturally drawn to creating art for the public sphere. I want to create art that people experience with their body, moving through, on, under and around. This Expanding Landscape (Proposal) is inspired by the rolling forms of the hill country that surround the Austin area and references the geologic movement that creates this landscape. Working with a blacksmith to develop this piece, I translated the geographic forms from mylar in my earlier work into steel. My facility of moving between different materials, scales, and processes is a cornerstone of my work. I work in a wide variety of materials, always aiming to take full advantage of the qualities unique to each one. My metal fabrication experience as a jewelry artist gives me a foundation for creating large scale structures out of steel.
