Starting with single piece of vellum, I create this three dimensional form by making cuts into the material that allow it to open up into a lacey, flowing landscape.  Mountains and valleys grow out of the paper to make a topography that alludes to geology as well as architectural forms.

Using an x-acto knife as my pen I “draw” these lines on the page to transform a flat sheet of material into an undulating form.  I am intrigued and mesmerized by the magic of creating a voluminous body that takes up space out of a thin layer.  Working spontaneously the sculpture takes shape as I cut across the sheet without a fixed plan in my head; decisions are made as I progress with the goal of creating a balanced piece that flows through space.
