Earlier this year Facebook approached me to create a new immersive installation for their offices in downtown Austin as part of their Artist in Residency program.
The goals of the program are to “Promote creativity, innovation, openness, and connectivity within our community through art and design.” They encourage the artists to realize work they haven’t had the opportunity to create thus far.
It's been a very exciting process to develop this new piece over the past several months and finally install it at the end of the summer.
I've been thinking about tessellations for a long while and this project seemed the perfect opportunity to explore this pattern of triangles and squares even further, pushing it into a piece that transforms this space into another world.
A tessellation is an arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.
The individual groupings of geometric structures against the deep royal blue wall truly give the installation a portrayal of an alluring galaxy of stars.
For me this represents the idea of people in the world- we are all connected to each other and when one moves it affects the shape of the rest.
